London Times – Tuesday August 26th 1975

Last week Rick McCosker was set to make a maiden Test century against England until the “Free George Davis” vandals sabotaged the wicket.  This week the FNLA will be just as surprised with the loss of the strategically important costal town of Nova Redondo to a rag tag column of FAPLA guerillas who appeared from nowhere, perhaps with the Cuban military in the role of the “Free George Davis” vandals.

The Australians have the forth Test at the Oval to seek their revenge, will the FNLA be able to find solace in finally taking Cabinda ?

Havana Herald Sunday 24th August 1975

The editor notes with amusement the baseless claims of the American poodle concerning aircraft losses in the recent struggle.  FAPLA aircraft were not even involved in the fighting, and the most charitable explanation that he can find is that our marvelous new Cuban anti-aircraft missiles so confused the fascist pilots that they did not know what they were seeing - certainly they saw nothing of the fight as they flew for safety!  As more of these invincible weapons are unloaded by our East German friends, victory is assured.

Here in Cabinda the streets are deserted apart from units of  MPLA and numerous Soviet “advisers”.

This month the allegedly CIA backed FNLA have advanced from Zaire to the outskirts of the city annihilating MPLA forces in two major battles on the way.

East German freighters can be seen offshore but the port infrastructure will not allow the easy landing of the kind of equipment we believe has been arriving in Luanda from Cuban supporters to FAPLA.

The fall of Cabinda must be likely given the lack of defenses and what has appeared chaotic organization over the last month, although senior contacts in MPLA suggest the army will stand firm now they are fighting in their own suburbs against the imperialist backed aggressors.

The success of FNLA units here is dramatically different to that of the FNLA units north of Luanda on the coast and we seek clarification on who is leading the attack on Cabinda reports Colin Pierre.

Major units of the MPLA freedom fighters are rumored to be heading across country towards Periera de Eça.  If these brave boys are successful they will strangle the supply route for the white supremacists who are congregating in  Sa da Bandiera.

Comrades I am lucky to be able to get this story to you as last Friday while on vacation in south Zaire with two fellow birdwatchers my travelling companions were arrested by Zairian police.  The trumped up charges of spying within the FLEC area are pathetic and I have given full details to the Cuban authorities to ensure my friends are freed as soon as possible.  These fascist bully police are acting clearly on the behalf of the militarily incompetent looser of the great Vietnamese struggle – America.

Fortunately I was engaged in a theological discussion with a young student, Candice Adongo and was therefore able to evade also being arrested - Samuél Castillo “Our man from Havana”.

Nova Lisboa has been under heavily armed mercenary control for the last week according to reports that have reached the free press here in the Socialist Republic of Moçâmedes.

There have been significant arrivals at the airbase outside Nova Lisboa from the bigoted fascist bastions to the south including a knowledgeable observer quoted, “ one Piper Aztec, one each of Cessna 172, Cessna 180 and Cessna 310, one Rockwell Turbocommander, one Mooney, three F.27s, and one Alouette II have all landed in the last week and have been painted flat green with UNITA markings”.

In addition, as we go to press we have heard that C-130s and DC-4s of the South African Air Force are believed to have been regular visitors to the airbase.

To combat this unwarranted aggression and interference in the democratic process in Angola it is good to know that the ex -Portuguese Air Force 2ª Região Aérea airbase outside Luanda has spontaneously joined the FAPLA freedom fighters in their successful struggle against the CIA backed FNLA.

Although it was understood that MPLA had not been successful in their control of the countryside to the east of Angola, we have subsequently heard that the strategy they used was effective.  This is supported by the news that Agostinho Neto, a senior member within the Soviet sponsored terrorist army in Angola, MPLA was not executed as reported last week but is apparently in robust health and leading rallies in Malanje.

In addition, it has been reported that significant activity has been observed in UNITA controlled centers in the south west rather than as expected in the east.  This may perhaps be to attempt to gain control of the pro-communist strategically important town of Moçâmedes.

 Errata –
Last week we reported the death of Agostinho Neto, we note that this was a case of mistaken identity and we are please to confirm that Senhor Neto (52)  is alive and well.

Citizen Agorki Neto of Sevastapol, who was working for the People’s Co-operative Land Bank, sadly died when a heavy goods lorry while traveling between Teixeira de Sousa and Luso crushed his jeep.  An eyewitness said, “ it was a tragic accident, he did not stand a chance as the lorry driver’s brakes failed going downhill and ran straight over his jeep.  The only luck was that the impact stopped the lorry and saved both the driver and its cargo of agricultural machinery”

“Our Man in Havana reports that the senior echelon of the leadership of FAPLA has been retired following the insufficiently revolutionary "thrust" north in July.

Greater enthusiasm for the great cause is expected in August following the appointment of Samuel R B o "Navigador" to direct command.”

London Times – Thursday July 24th 1975

It has been reported that Agostinho Neto, a senior member within the Soviet sponsored terrorist army in Angola, MPLA, has been executed due to differences over military strategy in the recent turmoil in Angola.  He was an advocate of defending regional centers to restrict the mobility of UNITA.

The action may have been taken due to the recent successes by the Cuban backed FAPLA on the western coast of Angola, who have used a single very strong military force to engage with the western  sponsored FNLA and now are believed to control all major towns between Luanda and the Zaire border.

Some commentators have however attributed the FAPLA success more to the bad military leadership within the FNLA.

The people’s co-operative land bank is proud to applaud the selfless communards who have given their summer vacations to assist with the development of peanut farms in eastern Angola.  Your intrepid man in the field Comrade Pavel Tarasov can confirm that the farm machinery supplied by the workers of the motherland is being prepared to reap a great harvest in the heart of Africa.

An increased number of Russian agricultural advisers with packing cases of agricultural parts have been observed travelling on the newly built, with Chinese assistance, TAZARA railway from Dar es Salaam, via Zambia and heading for Portugalia reports Colin Pierre from Kananga.

“It was vague what crops they were intending to assist on developing when I attempted to interview the Russians.  I made a joke about perhaps gun cotton and the atmosphere went very cold.”

Bishop Alexandre Fidelius O’Martin of Moçâmedes, in the Archdiocese of Lubango has demanded that the Portuguese authorities clarify why there have been so many Portuguese military aircraft flying over Moçâmedes from the Portuguese base at Cuito Cuanavale.  He suggests that the colonial government was “bullying” his congregation with their actions.  No reply has been received as we go to print, to numerous calls by the Meteor to the Portuguese Air Force 2ª Região Aérea HQ outside Luanda
